Dordogne is the third largest French department in terms of size. It is part of the region of Aquitaine. This department was created during the French Revolution on 4th March 1790 on part of the ancient province of Périgord.

Dordogne has many tourist attractions including more than 1,000 castles, the best known of which are the castles of Beynac, Commarque, l'Herm and Milandes. You will also find walled towns close to Sarlat as well as nine of the most beautiful villages in France; Belvès, Beynac et Cazenac, Domme, Limeuil, Montpazier, La Roque-Gageac, St-Amand de Coly, St Jean de Côle and St Léon sur Vézère. Other well-known tourist sites include the Lascaux caves at Montignac, the Combarelles caves and the Font de Gaume caves at Eyzies de Tayac.
