The capital of black Perigord, Sarlat is an exceptionally well preserved town. Every alley and courtyard bears witness to its architectural heritage which goes back over 1,000 years. The unique rooftops, the local honey-coloured stone, the turrets and the mullioned windows all contribute to Sarlat's unique atmosphere of tranquil peace.
One of Dordogne's administrative centres, Sarlat spreads over a large area and has almost 10,000 inhabitants. The main administrative centre of the Dordogne is Périgueux with some 31,193 inhabitants. Other large towns nearby are Bergerac (26,053 inhabitants) and Nontron (3,500 inhabitants).
The map you will find by clicking here will help you to find your way around the historical town. We advise you to follow the guided visit that we suggest. Don't forget, if you need practical advice on such matters as lost or stolen identity papers, where to buy pharmaceutical products or find a doctor, you can refer to "Sarlat Pratique" which lists all the useful addresses.
